Alright all you Forum maniacs…this Friday we will be hosting one of our very own GMUE’s. I am pleased to say that E-Money (a.k.a Eric Humphrey) will be giving us a shortened version of his ultra-cool thesis. A thesis which he defended successfully this past Monday…big congrats! It’s a great opportunity to see what a M.S. thesis entails. Just the thought of it makes me want to run recreationally!

Music Engineering Lab members Mark Freeman, Eric Humphrey, Patrick O’Keefe, Stephen Molfetta, and Matt Montag are presenting posters on a novel multi-touch table and a new music-exercise system at the second annual UM Technology Showcase, sponsored by the Miller School of Medicine and the UM Office of Technology Transfer, at the Ritz-Carlton Miami on November 18 and 19, 2009. Swanky!

Thesis Defense

M.S. MuE student Eric Humphrey is defending his thesis entitled “A Computational System for the Automatic Creation of Music Playlists for Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation in Recreational Running” on Monday morning at 10:30 in the MuE classroom. Please feel free to attend if you are able to do so.

NVIDIA Grant

MuE is happy to report the receipt of a grant from NVIDIA to fund a personal supercomputer for audio research. The supercomputer will be built around three of NVIDIA’s Tesla C1060 GPU engines.

It’s official…the new MUE website is here! It’s sleek, sexy, shiny, and ready to take on the world. Just like us MUE’s. Make sure to attend this Friday Forum for an opportunity to hear Myron Nettinga’s insights on what its like to be an academy award winning Alum. He’s done major work on these little films you might have heard of: Black Hawk Down and Kill Bill Vol.1. He will also be hosting master classes after Forum. I should remind all of you that Forum begins at 9:05 am SHARP. Since we’ll be having UM press covering the event, absolutely no one will be allowed to come in late. So lets be on time and take advantage of the opportunities that our program gives us. See you on Friday bright and early!

With the addition of the Students Page to the website, all students (both current and Alumni) can add their names and links to their own websites/blogs/myspace to the website. This gives you a perfect chance to display your personal work and interests to the web!

This week’s Forum will feature Carlos Icaza, former engineering manager at Adobe/Macromedia who will be giving a talk about his business ventures in Silicon Valley and what it’s like to run a start-up company. His team creates mobile applications for devices. I heard him speak last year and it was very insightful. So let’s be on time (jab at last week?) and give him the time he deserves. Lets also not forget that Marine Leroux, Carlos’ business associate, will be giving a talk this same Friday at 11 am in MEA 202. Its a great opportunity to hear the CEO of Bamboudesign give her insights on what its like to operate such a high tech business in San Francisco and Paris!
